Abstract
The meeting between President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and President Vladimir Putin, among others, on 31 August–1 September, in Tianjin, is a historic projection of Eurasian power and a “pivot to Asia” from within the region. The meeting of these three leaders confirms a process of redistribution of power on the international stage, a rebalancing that eminently favours the three and opens possibilities for the global South. The meeting is a part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), of which China is the current chair. China has worked relentlessly to make this meeting a success, especially because it is followed by a commemorative Chinese parade (3 September) to mark 80 years since World War II, the Japanese surrender and the end of the Anti-fascist War in September 1945. The world is unlikely to miss the symbolism of both these events.
