Abstract
The application of international law to space activities dates back to the early Space Age. In 1961, a few years after the launch of Sputnik-1 satellite, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that provided that international law applies to outer space and celestial bodies. The said resolution also provided that “outer space and celestial bodies are free for exploration and use by all States in conformity with international law…”.1 Contrary to popular notions, space activities do not take place in a vacuum and the law governing national space activities exists. The national space activities of a State include military activities in space and all such ‘national space’ activities are bound to conform to the applicable international law. In this chapter, I provide an overview of the international space law applicable to military uses of outer space. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Centre for Air Power Studies, New Delhi; individual chapters, the contributors.
