Abstract

Rafah, at the edge of Gaza bordering Egypt, an area of 25 square miles, shelters 1.5 million Palestinian refugees forcibly herded here by the Israeli military, when northern Gaza faced merciless bombing. Rafah was designated a ‘‘safe zone’’ but safety here is a mirage, as United Nations (UN) Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths said: “There is not anywhere safe for people to go in Gaza.”
