Abstract

This chapter aims to provide an introductory reading on the confluence of science, technology, and society (STS) and international relations (IR) disciplines. The major geopolitical phenomenon witnessed in the first quarter of the 21st century is the politics of digital technology. The trade war between the US and China, the usage of disinformation tactics by Russia in Ukraine, online extremist propaganda, and the rise of ISIS are a few examples. With the growing uncertainty of technology-led global tussles, it is important to understand the appropriate methods of analysing digital geopolitics. The chapter emphasises the integration of STS and IR to clearly understand the influence of AI on geopolitics. Further, it elaborates on two major theoretical approaches - systems theory and actor-network theory. Finally, it briefs on the creation of narratives
