Abstract

Until the 20th century, there has been more consideration of the rights of the accused than those of the victims. Even with the advent of the victimology movement, changes have been minimal for the marginalized community of victims and their families. In 2009, the addition of Section 357 to the Indian Criminal Procedure Code mandates that the State grant compensation to the victims of crime, but the execution of these schemes in practicality remains impaired by procedural loopholes and territorial applicability. The authors of this book undertake a global policy analysis in the arena of victim assistance in comparison to the one in India and suggests certain legislative reforms for consideration of our policy analysts, lawmakers and victim rights activists. The book, Victims' Assistance in India is an outstanding work that underlines the plight of the victims of crime and abuse of power who ought to be at the centre of the criminal justice system. It is a welcome initiative that will be valuable for all stakeholders in the justice system. Hon'ble Justice Mr. Arjan K. Sikri Supreme Court of India
