Abstract

Among the dimensions of sensory perception, there are some senses that dominate the rest. Sight and hearing are accurate examples of such senses, while olfactory and tactile senses tend to take a backseat. All prominent universities and institutions in the current era are expected to accommodate disabilities of various types – from physical disabilities to mental disabilities. Physical disabilities, here, also include visual and hearing impairment. This study will attempt to lay out a sensory map of Jindal Global University in Sonepat, Haryana, India. It is a campus that has a global outlook, and in its policy seeks to accommodate disabilities. The study will analyze the locations, spaces, and architecture of the campus, in order to understand the parts of campus where different senses are dominant. It will lay a contemplative theory as to the remodeling of such spaces and architecture in order to suit different senses, as well as the impairment of dominant senses such as sight and hearing. Furthermore, establishing the type of dominance of such visual culture in a university campus will lead to changes in approaches of viewing not merely disability, but perception itself. The images of campus that are most often constructed will be deconstructed, and the visual inputs around campus will be analyzed using methods of digital ethnography to paint a picture of the influence of such a dominant visual perception on the occupants of spaces.
