Purpose: This study investigates the co-occurrence of high work engagement and high burnout among faculty members in Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). While engagement is traditionally viewed as the opposite of burnout, emerging evidence suggests that both states may co-exist within the same individual. The study further examines the role of organization engagement in explaining this relationship and explores the lived experiences underlying simultaneous occurrence of high engagement and high burnout. Methodology: An explanatory sequential mixed-method design was adopted. Quantitative data were collected from 408 faculty members across Indian HEIs and analysed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and Latent Profile Analysis (LPA). The quantitative phase was followed by qualitative interviews with faculty members identified as experiencing high engagement and high burnout, the qualitative data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis to gain deeper insights.
