The period of youth in an individual’s life is characterized by a sense of strong will, energy and curiosity (Deshmukh, 2020). The primary developmental challenge that an individual faces in this phase according to Erikson (1950, 1968) is Intimacy vs Isolation. This phase is also termed as emerging adulthood which is characterized by a sense of uncertainty regarding the future and independent exploration in the sphere of love and work (Arnett, 2000). According to the reports of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Indian youth comprises of 27.2% of the population, which is the largest in the world. It has also been noted that romantic relationships are becoming increasingly common in adolescence and emerging adulthood (Darak et al., 2022). These relationships are governed by implicit or explicit norms, emotional and physical intimacy, and varied notions of commitment. Furthermore, romantic relationships and mental health have been found to have a bidirectional effect among Indian youth (Banandur et al., 2022).
