Abstract

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), climate change refers to variations in climatic patterns that are ascertained by measuring changes in climate attributes, such as average surface temperatures or average precipitation, which typically last for decades or for even more prolonged durations of time (IPCC, 2007). The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has defined climate change as modifications in the constitution of atmosphere that can be ascribed directly or indirectly to anthropogenic activities. Such variations in climate occur over and above the variations that occur in climate naturally across comparable durations (IPCC, 2007). Although there are variations in the way climate change has been defined, an unequivocal consensus has been reached on the fact that climate change could inflict unprecedented human and economic costs globally.
