This chapter examines how artificial intelligence (AI) can improve mediator communication to address persistent ethical and power-related challenges in mediation practice. While mediation is grounded in party self-determination, scholarship shows that this principle is often compromised, particularly in court-connected and high-volume settings involving self-represented or marginalized parties. The chapter argues that a key, but underexplored source of this gap lies in how mediators explain their role, process, and interventions. Drawing on procedural justice theory and critiques of mediation discourse, it develops a behavior-based communication framework supported by human in the loop AI model. Rather than promoting automation, AI is conceptualized as a constrained ethical support tool that enhances clarity, transparency, and cultural responsiveness while preserving human judgment and party autonomy. The chapter also proposes a context-sensitive deployment framework and illustrates the model through use cases in court referred mediations and online dispute resolution settings.
