Abstract

Geopolitical unrest/disruption has been identified to be one of the most impactful and unmanageable sources of financial risk to travel and tourism platforms worldwide. Trade sanctions and border closures, military actions, diplomatic disruptions, and politically motivated aviation bans can squeeze demand, tie up capital, and shake up earnings, and redefine competitive markets in a pace and uncertainty that traditional financial risk management models are ill-positioned to absorb. This chapter explores the intersection of geopolitics, business strategy, and corporate finance through the lens of global travel platforms by contending that AI-based geopolitical risk intelligence is a transformative yet underexploited source of firms dealing with this type of risk. We create an Adaptive Financial Strategy Framework combining AI-enabled geopolitical sensing with real options theory, behavioral finance knowledge, and strategic scenario planning to create a more dynamic and resilient approach to corporate financial decision-making in politically unstable environments.
