Abstract

This autoethnography explores the topic of anticipatory loss, as pre-death living: a silent, progressive state that reshapes normal life around a sense of an approaching end that is both unpredictable and predictable at the same time. Using thematic narrative analysis, using de-identified diaries, text messages, and retrospection work written over years of intense caregiving to my husband with Stage IV cancer, I demonstrate that the theme of borrowed time altered the subject of attention, intimacy, and selfhood. The account is organized in five dynamics, which include living in the countdown; alternating hope and dread; vigilance and mental forecasting; care as control; and daily rituals that comfort and at the same time enhance fear. The paper identifies the ethical pressure to continue to be functional and positive when living with love, anger, guilt, silence, and dread. Reflexively, the paper shows how anticipatory loss compels one to remain functional on the surface while privately living through uncertainty, exhaustion, and emotional fracture. The paper ends up with practice-facing implications of support that commences prior to death, as well as states of relational ethics, anonymization and narrative responsibility.
