This case study traces the evolution of a small-scale enterprise in Kerala, situating its journey within the socio-political and economic contexts of the region and post-colonial India. The Chalakkudy Kamath family, part of the Gauda Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) trading community from Mattanchery in Cochin, began as small-scale traders supplying office and stationery items to colonial and Indian firms. Leveraging their prior connections with the Scottish firms, they diversified into new sectors and product lines. By the late 1980s, R. Nithyananda Kamath, third-generation entrepreneur of Krishna Novelty Stores, was at a critical inflection point as India transitioned towards liberalization, privatization, and globalization of the economy. This case explores the strategic dilemmas a small-scale family business faces in adapting to macro-environment policy changes and the role of partnerships in navigating change. This case is well-suited for classroom discussion on family business, small business strategy, and entrepreneurial ecosystem.
