Abstract

With an increase in the international trade agreements post liberalization, the trade barriers have reduced for Indian micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Also, according to World Bank (2020) there is an increase in number of new firms per year in both manufacturing and service sector in India. By laying the foundations, Government of India has set a target to double its GDP from $ 2.5 trillion to $ 5 trillion and the contribution of MSMEs from 30% to 50% in GDP. It is estimated that the $1 trillion is required from exports to achieve this target and the burden lies on MSMEs. Despite having comparative advantage over firms from Asian countries, many MSMEs from India are not able to internationalize. Therefore, it is necessary to take the bottom-up approach and understand the firms’ perspective. So, this study aims to identify various enablers of MSME internationalization, prioritize, and understand the mutual relationships of top ranked enablers. The study has been executed in five phases namely bibliometric analysis, identification of enablers, assessment, survey of MSMEs, and four layered Cake Foundation – Approach – Strategy – Transition (FAST) model development. First, the bibliometric analysis is performed of literature on MSME internationalization to identify the current trends of publication in the light of resource-based view (RBV). According to RBV, firms that effectively leverage their valuable, rare, inimitable, and organized resources can achieve superior performance and sustainable competitive advantages resulting in internationalization.
