Informal family care is the most prevalent form of old age support for Indians. However, the steady growth of old age homes (OAHs) signals an ongoing change in the caregiving landscape in India. This chapter explores how these changes are represented on social media, given their widespread use and potentially influential role in shaping and reflecting social perceptions. YouTube was selected as the social media platform for this study owing to its popularity in India. An inductive content analysis of 64 YouTube videos revealed 5 primary categories: “OAH living as supportive family substitute,” “Fractured expectations: What kind of children are they?,” “The dark side of institutional care: Abuse, neglect, and vulnerability,” “Newer models of care and the politics of choice,” and “Visions of old age: A mixed portrayal.” While viewed as a last resort, OAHs were portrayed as offering companionship, safety, and dignity. However, they were also seen as sites of suffering, reflecting an ambivalence in their depictions. The analysis situates these portrayals within the broader context of family norms, changing urban lifestyles, and socioeconomic class. In doing so, this chapter enhances current understanding of the social media discourse surrounding non-family-based eldercare arrangements in India.
