Due to the North-South divide, the South has always been neglected and undervalued. In 1969, the term “Global South” was coined by American writer and political activist Carl Oglesby, who spoke about the dominance of the northern countries over the South, which created an intolerant social order. In the present, the Global South is viewed through a lens in which countries from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Oceania voice problems that remain unaddressed. Some of the issues the Global South faces include underrepresentation in international forums and groupings, a lack of global governance, improper functioning of financial institutions, several vulnerabilities, such as climate governance, democratic struggles, human rights issues, and impacts from geopolitical conflicts and wars. India has emerged as a significant contributor toward the Global South as it has garnered international support by hosting the G20, advocating the concerns of the Global South, showcasing transitions in economic development, and strategically establishing itself for a “multidirectional and multidimensional alignment strategy” along with dealing with China's influence and preserving the efforts of NAM. The chapter focuses on the efforts that India is making to take forward the agenda of the Global South , which can be seen in the various sectors of health security and vaccine diplomacy, coalition for disaster management, humanitarian rescues, peacekeeping missions, counterterrorism, technical and economic cooperation programs, and aiming for reforms in multilateral institutions and forums like the induction of the African Union in the G20 and continued efforts in NAM.
