Bangladesh was one of the weakest economies in the 1970s when it emerged as an independent state following its breakaway from Pakistan. The next five decades stand testimony to Bangladesh’s perseverance in overcoming its social, political and economic challenges. Gradually, Bangladesh witnessed a steady economic expansion and a leap in infrastructure development, including growth in its energy sector. It is slated to graduate from a least developed country (LDC) status in 2026. The country had graduated from a low-income country to a lower middle-income country in 2015 and is en route to its vision of becoming a developed country by 2041. As it turned 50, Bangladesh became one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia with a 7.28-per cent growth in 2020, with a gross domestic product (GDP) standing at US$250 billion and trebling of its per-capita income to US$2,824 in 2021–2022 in a little over a decade. Once termed as a basket economy, Bangladesh transitioned to a middle-income country and is now predicted to be the 24th largest economy by 2030.
