Abstract
The Himalaya, one of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are habitat to an extensive range of flora and fauna, with the majority of them being native to the area. Millions of people rely on the Himalaya’s biodiversity for their livelihoods; therefore, safeguarding ecological balance and sustaining biodiversity becomes extremely important. Climate change has become the biggest threat to the sustenance of the biodiversity of the Himalaya. The region is warming at three times the rate of the global average. Declining cryosphere, changing land use and altering vegetation patterns, extreme weather events have led to high biodiversity losses including species extinction and extermination. The changed biological equilibrium of the area, due to climate change, causes a domino effect that leads to numerous other negative consequences. The migration of animals to higher altitudes results in the loss of unique ecosystems and the services they offer. At the same time, there are some generalist species that are benefiting from climate change. The purpose of the current review is to collect all related information on the impacts of climate change, including changes in ecology, behaviour, biology, phenology, and distribution on different taxa in the Himalaya and synthesize the overall impacts. The methodology of the study involves a comprehensive literature review that uses the Scopus and Google Scholar databases to ensure a transparent and meticulous synthesis of previous research on the impact of climate change on biological communities in Sikkim Himalaya. The study attempts to collect and analyse data on biodiversity patterns, ecosystem services, and changes in species distribution in response to changes in the climate in a logical and structured manner.
