Abstract

This chapter compares the Transhumanism and Divine Human projects as they relate to human lifespan extension, with a particular focus on the feasibility and necessary conditions for achieving unlimited longevity. I contend that these projects address complementary dimensions of the challenge, and that integrating their perspectives offers a greater likelihood of realizing meaningful, unlimited lifespan in conjunction with human flourishing. Specifically, I suggest that incorporating spiritual insights into the deployment of augmentation technologies may help avert the so-called Homo Deus scenario, in which humanity risks losing its relevance in an increasingly data-driven world. Finally, I introduce new criteria for evaluating and managing the beneficial use of exponential technologies: namely, the concept of Neoteny2 – or second-degree juvenilization – and an extended human capabilities approach.
