Abstract
Maternal healthcare poses a significant global health challenge as it is a non-dispensable part of the healthcare systems. Artificial intelligence (AI) and Machine learning (ML) have initiated taking a prominent part in addressing the challenges and barriers arising out of quality of services and access to care leading to an ever-increasing maternal mortality rate. The techniques and advancements used in early diagnostics, predicting a complicated pregnancy, identification of gestational diabetes in the first trimester by using the artificial intelligence for improving ante natal care (ANC) and post nata care (PNC) reduces preventable complications. Despite the potential benefits arising out of use of AI, the prominent issue of responsibility and liability in the use of AI in maternal healthcare system remains paramount. The absence of a defined and operating legislative framework adds up to the hurdles and the issue of prior informed consent, data privacy, algorithmic bias and the need for human oversight must be carefully addressed. Therefore, the study delves into the ethical and legal challenges. The study also focuses on rural-urban divide, technological barriers, and institutional failure. The study further develops into the Indian perspective of inculcation of AI in maternal healthcare system. The study also delves into future research directions including involvement of various stakeholders for framing a regulatory requirement for use of AI in maternal healthcare.
