The question of women’s political representation in India has been a tumultuous one, marked by long contestations, negotiations, and continuous delays. While the unanimous passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill in 2023 through the 106th Constitutional Amendment (officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam) registered a historic moment and a constitutional commitment towards women’s political presence and inclusion, the fate of its implementation remains uncertain as it has been made contingent upon the completion of a future census and delimitation exercise.
