Abstract

Bangladesh is presently in the midst of a severe political turmoil that resulted in its longest-serving prime minister fleeing, ushering in a 16-member Interim government led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Today’s Bangladesh is a far cry from the miracle story it had recorded around its 15 year by becoming the fastest growing nation after China and India. But its economic sheen had been dented in recent times due to complex issues of financial and internal instability and corruption. But the political difficulties it is now grappling with has been rather sharp and once again brought forward the political fragility of this nation. Undoubtedly, Bangladesh’s economic progress till about few years ago had captured the imaginations of the world, locating it in an enviable position with all major powers building strong bilateral ties with Dhaka. Bangladesh’s infrastructural and developmental projects made it a key player in South Asia, driven by its growth. This chapter will examine the political trajectory of Bangladesh over the past five decades, examining its periodic return to democracy. It will focus on the ongoing situation and the present struggle for the Interim Government to restore the political stability, democratic order and social cohesion. It will also attempt to explain how the changing geopolitical situation appears to India. As is well established, India was well engaged with Awami League and its leader Sheikh Hasina. The new developments in Bangladesh ruptured that bilateral stability and that has not been perceived favourably as will be explained herein.
