Abstract
The Indo-Pacific has emerged as a major region of contestation between the leading actors of the international system, that is, the U.S. and China. The Indian Ocean region in itself hosts some of the fastest-growing economies in the world, and economic growth in Asia continues shaping the strategic landscape. China’s increasing maritime presence and increasing ambitions in the region and beyond have been viewed with suspicion in several quarters of the world. The region has seen a series of hostilities, be it in the Taiwan Straits, in the South China Sea, or on India’s borders. With China’s ten-dash line claims, its faltering Belt and Road initiative, and its maritime patrols, a worrying trend has emerged. In several parts of the Indo-Pacific, including in South Asia and Southeast Asia, China’s power and influence are increasing rapidly to match that of the U.S. However, other important actors in the region, including India and Japan, exert significant influence in other countries of the region as well. In this context, this chapter explores the challenges thrown up by increasing Chinese influence in the region and some of the actions individual actors like India, the U.S. and Japan have undertaken. The purpose is to explore the possibilities of collaboration in these individual responses. The chapter relies on primary sources from four countries – India, Japan, the U.S., and China – as well as secondary sources. The methodology is inductive in nature.
