Abstract

Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, is an island nation which realized early on that climate change can drastically impact its future. It has taken several steps to address the challenges it regularly faces, one of them being the electrical power crisis. However, while trying to tackle the crisis, it faces additional roadblocks like barriers to its entry to global forums on climate, which need international collaborations and participation. With limited internationalization space due to complex political realities with the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan has been excluded from multiple international forums. This chapter analyses how Taiwan has addressed its domestic concerns about the effects of climate change. It will also discuss Taiwan’s approaches to climate diplomacy and how it participated in various international forums. Additionally, Taiwan has been playing a pivotal role in shaping the global fight against climate change through technological innovations. Though it is necessary to be part of the worldwide space to share ideas and experiences with other countries, Taiwan has been increasingly limited. The chapter will use official documents and statements from the government, activists, and several climate-focused societal organizations to discuss how Taiwan aims to combat climate change.
