This chapter examines the scope of the corporate sector’s contribution to achieving sustainable development goals and climate action goals by identifying their mutual dependence, scope for collaboration and its limitations. Achieving SDGs is at the core of the agenda for attaining sustainable development. They recognise the need for sustainable economic growth and acknowledge the challenges climate change poses to global ecosystems, economies, and societies. Given the substantial contribution of businesses to economic activities, they have a pivotal role in addressing this crisis by adopting sustainable practices, implementing carbon reduction strategies, and leveraging innovative technologies. This chapter explores the length and breadth of the corporate sector’s contribution to achieving sustainable development goals. Private sector contribution ranges from mobilising finance for sustainable operations, developing new technologies, to policy advocacy. The corporate sector can help achieve emission targets, promote a circular economy, and steer environmental initiatives. The chapter also discusses the challenges corporations face: financing, lack of leadership, complexity in interlinking goals with targets, and lack of an effective monitoring and evaluation framework. There is a need for reliable indicators to evaluate the progress of corporations. It further discusses the potential and challenges of ESG disclosure as an evaluation and monitoring tool for corporations.
