Abstract
This chapter will explore the implications of the Chinese ‘social-credit system’ for faith in democracy and the human condition. The ‘social-credit system’ is a digital instrument for controlling individuals’ behaviour by the Chinese Communist Party, developed since 2010. I argue that this system not only effectively destroys democracy – public control over government – but also undermines essential prerequisites of democracy: civil society and individual privacy, thus presenting an obstacle for an independent moral judgement and finally distorting the human condition...
