Abstract

Smart home technologies are transforming the living spaces of individuals by enabling them to design and manage their homes with higher control and convenience. With this research, we explore the barriers to the adoption of smart home technologies in India. This paper employs a qualitative approach and adopts the affordance theory. The results are based on the analysis of 5176 users’ feedback about their experiences with products based on smart home technologies. To understand the barriers to the adoption of smart home technologies in India, we considered e-commerce platforms and collected data from Flipkart (www.flipkart.in), Amazon (www.amazon.in), and YouTube. Data analysis is based on thematic analysis to identify the key emerging themes. The findings identify the barriers to the adoption of smart home products. These barriers can be categorized at the individual and ecosystem levels. At the individual level, these barriers are directly associated with the performance, after-sales services, the complexity of digital technologies, cost, and security. At the ecosystem level, barriers associated with the smart home technologies ecosystem impact the individual experience with these technologies. The research provides insights into the smart home technologies ecosystem and its criticality for individual experience. This research has practical implications for understanding the factors associated with the use of smart home technologies in India.
